If you liked the 2009 Star Trek film, there’s no reason not to love this one.

If you disliked this film despite enjoying the 2009 film, you are too tightly wound of a Star Trek purist.

If you disliked both this film and the 2009 film, we can’t be friends.

I felt like there was a better, more interesting movie that got summarized in the opening titles. What we get is not very interesting.

Most of the laughs were from absurd violence, but it’s not a comedy. The movie takes itself too seriously at times and missed an opportunity to be a true cult classic, like Army of Darkness.

I just scored 9164 in a round of GeoGuessr. I have no idea if that’s good or not. All I know is it is my new goal in life to break 10k.

This review reportedly contains spoilers.

How is it that the film has you grieve the man’s loss of his two fingers more than the death of his wife?

It’s a good movie with strong storytelling, but I never made an emotional connection with a single character and that prevents this very personal story from being told on a personal level. Any movie where the 4 characters close to the protagonist die I expect to cry a little, but not this movie.

I also don’t care for Tesla’s box. This scientific creation that duplicates objects and people. It’s a science fiction device in an otherwise empirical movie that I feel is unexplained, out of place, and unwelcome. I can’t get past it. And it’s unforgivable, because it’s sort of the entire point of the movie.

Has its moments, but essentially that’s all the film is: a collection of moments. I loved many of the action sequences, but was extremely disappointed with the film’s treatment of The Mandarin.
