  • “One thing has become clear though: the credibility of the idea that the internet can be a positive, freedom-promoting global force is facing its largest challenge to date. And it comes directly from one of its most outspoken supporters: the US government. Simply put, the US government has failed in its role as the “caretaker” of the internet. Although this was never an official designation, America controls much of the infrastructure, and many of the most popular services online are provided by a handful of American companies. The world is starting to sober up to the fact that much of what they’ve done online in the last decade is now cataloged in a top-secret facility somewhere in the United States.”

  • Video Game Console Generations

    1st Gen: Before my time

2nd Gen: Intellivision. The very best implementation of Burgertime ever. Also the best implementation of Bump and Jump. And I preferred Beauty and The Beast over Donkey Kong.

3rd Gen (8-bit): Nintendo Entertainment System. Tetris, Castlevania 2, RC Pro Am, and Super Mario 1, 2, & 3.

4th Gen (16-bit): Didn’t own or really play anything in this generation. Got to play Super NES and Sega Genesis at friends houses, but didn’t love either as much as Tetris on my NES.

5th Gen (64-bit): Nintendo 64. Defined by Goldeneye, but I didn’t own a N64 until just a couple years ago.

6th Gen: Xbox. In fact I believe I purchased a copy of Halo before I bought the console.

7th Gen: Xbox 360. The first console I pre-ordered. Also the first console I purchased a replacement when it broke.

    8th Gen: TBD

  • iOS 7 icons

I’ve been looking at screenshots of iOS home screens and icons for the last 24 hours. Quick thoughts:

    • Some of these icons have gone too abstract. the Videos app clapboard icon is an abstract of the iOS 6 icon which was gimmicky to begin with. The Safari icon is almost unrecognizable as a compass needle; it looks like a kitchen timer.
    • The hues of green, red, blue, yellow, and purple remind me of an Easter basket.
    • Let’s be honest: the Notes, Stocks, Game Center, Newsstand, Passbook, and Compass apps are getting put in a junk folder by 90% of iPhone users, so who really cares if the icons are ugly or pretty. If Command Center (the swipe up from the bottom) menu is somewhat useful, I imagine the Settings app is getting buried in a folder too.
    • They fixed the Maps icon so the route is no longer taking a left hand turn off of an overpass.
    • The Clock icon isn’t at 9:41 or 10:15. I wonder if it will update like the calendar icon updates the day of week and day of month.
    • The Newsstand icon has words on it. That’s not usually not like Apple to add text in an icon.

It also seems all the demos are on a white iPhone, not a black one as in years past.

And I think it strange they still call that app Videos since 1) the content of the app are Movies and TV Shows and 2) the phone has a video camera that makes videos that you view in the Photos app.

  • “We do nothing wrong when we make love or go to the bathroom. We are not deliberately hiding anything when we seek out private places for reflection or conversation. We keep private journals, sing in the privacy of the shower, and write letters to secret lovers and then burn them. Privacy is a basic human need.”
